Do you know Teddy, the teddy bear? Its history spans the ages . This is the famous plush for several generations. A plush made in honor of a former American president, Theodore Roosevelt!
To understand this story, you have to go back to 1902, at the same time when Mount Pelee erupted in Martinique. A year into his term as the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt takes part in a bear hunting party in Mississippi. The governor of this region had invited him. During this day, unlike the other hunters in the hunt, Mr. Roosevelt had not spotted a single bear.
The President's aides after this hunt decided to tie a black bear to a tree. And they summoned Theodore and offered to shoot the bear. The latter, considering this method unsportsmanlike, refused to shoot the bear. Subsequently this event was relayed as news in newspapers throughout the country , reporting that for the first time, a head of state refused to kill a bear. This was all the more surprising with his reputation as a “big game hunter”, that he surprised the whole country.
An icon is born
Political cartoonist Clifford Berryman after reading the article decided to satirize the president's adamant refusal to kill the bear. This cartoon was published in the Washington Post a few days later.
Genius idea came after these events by Mr. Michtom Morris, (owner of a candy store and manufacturer of stuffed animals with his wife Rose) to create a teddy bear and to dedicate it to the president who had to “save the 'bear". The “ Teddy's Bear ” was then born!
Of course, Mr. Michtom asked the president for permission to use his first name. From that moment, the legend of the Teddy Bear was born . The Michtom family mass-produced this teddy bear and through its fame and growing sales, founded the Ideal Toy Company . Nowadays, the history of the Teddy bear is lost, but its popularity is still worldwide and unavoidable even if the origin dates back more than a century.
